At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Largest Security Action on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's records.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, local authorities stated. Over 80 people were arrested.
Fierce clashes erupted when about 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with shooting, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities said.
The United Nations human rights body said it was "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements adjacent to Rio's airport is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.
Local authorities said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
