Blast Costs Three Law Enforcement Officers Amid Eviction Action in Northern Italy
Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
Sequence of Events
The explosion occurred as police and firefighters went into the property in the vicinity of Verona to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
All three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Legal Proceedings
One male and one female were arrested at the location and another man who escaped following the explosion was apprehended soon after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.
The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the scene showed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
Background and Motive
The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, said the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.
Mediators had been sent to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings caused the explosion.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander told the media.
A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the minister confirmed.
Injuries and Destruction
The wounded by the explosion included 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.
The prosecutor believed the detonation had occurred on a floor above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the explosion, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.
Neighbor Statements
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to reporters, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the three men who had died in the line of duty.
